Obv: laureate-headed bust of Commodus (lightly bearded) wearing cuirass and paludamentum, r. Rev; ΗΓ ΚΑΙ CEOYIΛI - ΑΝ(ΟΥ ΑΓΧΙΑΛΛΕΩΝ), nude Heracles standing, l., holding club in right hand with lion's skin draped over his left arm. Not in RPC 4 online. Varbanov 119, (unpublished, R5) incorrectly attributed to legate Julius Castus. This coin was struck under Caecilius Servillianus. Rev: ΔΡΙΑΝΟΠΟΛƐΙΤΩΝ, nude Heracles wrestling with the Nemean lion. Like AMNG 4, 10549 (temporary), except laureate, without cuirass and paludamentum and different obverse legend. A new variety for RPC 4...............................(Image) $45

                    

211. Commodus (Augustus). 177-192 AD. MOESIA INFERIOR, Nicopolis. Æ (18mm, 2.54 gm, 8h). Obv: ΑΥ M ΑΥP ΚΟΜΟΔΟС, Laureate head, right. Rev: ΝƐΙΚΟΠOΛΙ ΠΡΟС ΙСΤ, infant Dionysos(?) walking r., holding kantharos and thrysos with fillet at both ends. RPC 4 online__; AMNG 1242. Dark green patina. Very rare. The Nicopolis expert, who has the same type, writes "Dionysos(?), HrHJ (2018) 8.10.8.3, rare (R8). [Obverse legend includes] AVT M AVPH, [and reverse legend includes] ΠPOC EICTP.  Pick (AMNG) writes: Naming the figure which is cut crude is unsure, because the attributes are blurry. The object going from the r. hand over the shoulder backwards seems to be a long rod and could be a hint to Pan. That would match the peaks which could be seen on the head (on better preserved coins) which rather looks like horns than ties of a wreath"......................................................................................................(Image) $45
